SOASchool: Certified SOA Architect

I am currently studying for the first module of the 5 module certification traject for becoming a SOA Certified Architect.
What I like about the traject is that you have the option to go to workshops or order self study kits. The workshops can be followed also at the SOA Symposium in Rotterdam in october 2009.
Furthermore the exams are based on the books of Thomas Erl a respected author in the SOA field.

I have ordered the self study kit and it took a couple of weeks to arrive. It contains two reading materials, one handout of the presentation (fortunately with an audio CD) and one what to study and example questions (unfortunately just three). The audio CDs are a pain to listen to. It looks like generated from text with hardly any tonations.
The best way for me was to read the SOA Principles of Service Design book. Tomorrow (4 sept 2009) is my exam for this first module. Keep you up-to-date about the level required.

What I am curious about though is how this certification is seen by customers. Has it reached the image of the Java certifications for example yet? That still must be seen, i guess.

  1. Today I passed my first Module exam!
The questions were pretty detailed, so you have to study otherwise you won't pass. The book and the presentation handouts indeed did the trick for me at least, so no workshop needed. I passed with 92% and you pass with 80% of the 50 questions. Unfortunately I was not allowed to see which questions I failed. The questions in which you have to check which of the 4 statements are true/false (several) statements are possible, were the hardest one. In this case you have to know the exact details.

Up to Module2 for the Certified SOA Professional.

  2. Can you tell me the objectives for this exam? Do I have to buy the studykit to know the objectives?

    Thanks in advance.

  3. For this first exam, the objectives are the basics of the Service Orientation Principles of the Service Oriented Computing paradigm. Why should you want a SOA, how to establish it.
If you read the book of Thomas Erl you also know the objectives.

  4. Which book should be followed for first module.I have "SOA - Priciples Of Service Design" book. Is it sufficient ??

  5. You should read this book indeed! However you can not do the exam without a Prometric ID (see also www.soaschool.com/selfstudy). I recommend to order this selfstudy kit and read the book. This was sufficient for me to pass the exam.

  6. Study kit costs too much money. I am going through book only and couple of articles on internet. Is it sufficient? Any specific topic which is not covered in book. I am studying only chapter 3and chapter 4 of "SOA Principles of Service Design book". Do i need to study something else.

  7. Within the SelfStudy kit all chapters of the book are referenced. I also suggest that you read and understand the whole book.
Remember that the certification is meant to have a good basic knowledge and so the whole book is worthwhile reading.
That's all you need to know for the first exam.

  8. Hey Roger,
Did you finally take the second exam? I am yet to take my first one. I am thinking of just relying on the book for the first module and perhaps buy the materials for the later ones (they are a bit expensive).
    Cheers,
    Abhi.

  9. @Abhi Sur
Yes I did my second exam a couple of weeks ago already. It can be done without the materials and reading the recommended book.

  10. Hi Roger,

I've earned the credential last week. If you haven't cleared S90.09A, please be careful of it. I ran out of time in that exam because the questions are extremely long and clumsy and so I couldn't get its Honor grade.

    Regards,
    Kan

  12. Hi Roger,

    Yes, I am.

I used the official self-study kits, with the aids of the official text books from Thomas Erl's well-known titles. How about you?

  13. I have created a report about my experiences with the SOA Certified Professional (SOACP) of soaschool.com. I think that everyone "doing" SOA should make this certification.

    Here is my report: http://www.kai-waehner.de/blog/2011/02/01/first-hand-report-certification-soa-certified-professional-soacp-of-soaschool/

  14. The last exam (Module 9) was pretty hard. I did not pass the first time, probably not prepared well. The questions were all thee possible answers and the 4th was always "None of the Above". The questions are about an architecture problem and the possible solutions (the use service orientation principles and/or SOA Design Patterns). Now I have to wait another 30 days to be able to retake this last exam for my SOA Architect Certification.

@Kai: A good overview of the SOACP !

OSB 10gR3 and SWA and MTOM

This blog is about using soap with attachments and the use of MTOM within the OSB (10gR3). A service is created that accepts a soap with attachment (DocumentService) and translates it to a service that accepts a binary element. MTOM is used for performance reasons for the second. Some notes: * For the use of attachments you need RPC-style document instead of the usual document-style. This due to the fact that the document-style limits a message to a single . * A service can not have both SWA and MTOM within OSB. First a WSDL is setup for the DocumentService: The $attachments variable holds the attachments and the body holds the attachment data. Also other data is stored within the attachment element (see h
